TARAMAKAU RIVER PEAKS

12.7 MT PFEIFER (1704m) is normally reached by the steep bushed spur that runs from the junction of Lake Creek (Lake Kaurapataka) and Pfeifer Creek to the scrub and snowgrass tops. A traverse southwest from MT PFEIFER leads to the escarpment above the Deception River. MT TARAPUHI (1605m), Waharoa Saddle and ONE SHOT HILL (1214m) can be obtained from here. (Grade. 1)

12.8 MT HOWE (1660m) is not easily approached from the Taramakau catchment, however an unconfirmed route apparently exists on the spur on the true left of Alexander Creek. Follow Alexander Creek for a short distance, then climb out and up on it’s true-left (to continue further meets with waterfall barriers). The initial dense vegetation gives way to low shrub with few obstacles, then eventually screes can be followed, sidling on the western side of the ridge to gain the summit. (Not Graded)

12.9 MT ALEXANDER (1958m) is normally approached via Camp Creek north of Poerua, however it may be approached from the Taramakau River over more difficult terrain. Cross the Taramakau River opposite Rocky Creek (a very wet exercise). Bash through easy scrub and swamp to meet the obvious rock gut that cuts a swathe through the entire south face of the mountain. This steep gut is easily followed, several small waterfalls and cliffs are bypassed on its slippery, vegetated sides (with care!).

A major fork is met about ½ way up the route. To follow the true left branch will meet with a "fresh" overhanging rock choke (possibly climbable if you have no fear). Alternatively climb out of the gut (prior to the fork) on its true right, climbing on shrubby ground to join an easy rocky ridge. This ridge merges into scree slopes, followed by a series of easy gullies and scrambles leading to the summit. (Grade. 1+)

13. BLACK, CRAIGIEBURN & TORLESSE RANGES

LOWER BLACK RANGE

The Black Range commences at Avoca Col (1852m) at the head of the Avoca River and runs eastwards to MT HORRIBLE (1234m). The following section deals exclusively with the range east of Lagoon Saddle.

13.1 MT BRUCE (1630m) is a popular side-trip from the Cass - Lagoon Saddle tramping circuit. Reach its summit by ascending the Lagoon Saddle track from Cora Lynn Station until you break out of the last piece of forest. Ascend the spur to join the sweeping ridge to the summit. The views across the Southern Alps from up here are ledgendary. Cornices form on the summit ridge in winter and the basins to the southeast are avalanche prone. An alternative is to climb the old “unmarked” track that ascends directly from Lagoon Saddle shelter. (Grade. 1-)
