1. WAIMAKARIRI PEAKS
Some of the most diverse climbing opportunities exist in the upper Waimakariri River catchment. Several well placed huts provide excellent bases for all climbing activity from the river valley and its tributaries.
ANTI CROW HUT AREA
1.1 MT STEWART (1934m) is climbed by its Southeast Ridge at the confluence of the Waimakariri and Crow Rivers. An alternative route follows the slope opposite Greenlaw Creek to access the bush line and then sidles east into the south basin and on to the Low Peak. First ascent by R.R. Chester, I.W. Tucker, C.W. Evans and A.H. Candy, 1927. (Grade. 1+)
1.2 A long difficult, dangerous, traverse of the Jellicoe Ridge from MT STEWART, over MT GUINEVERE (2042m) and MT LANCELOT (2112m) leads to MT ROLLESTON (2275m). (Grade. 2-)
1.3 The MOTTRAM PEAKS (1789m) make an easy climb from the main valley. Follow either the Northeast Spur from the Anti Crow River or the small stream below the old Greenlaw Hut site which drains the north basin between the peaks. (Grade. 1)
ANTI CROW HEAD-WATERS
The mountains at the head of the Anti Crow River are rock, scree and snowslope peaks climbed preferably from a high camp in the basins north of the various peaks, cols and saddles.
1.4 MT GIZEH (2162m), COW PEAK (2022m) and MT DAMFOOL (2030m) are climbed from various high cols accessible from the upper basin. A traverse of the three peaks starts at Echo Col. The traverse can be continued to the MOTTRAM PEAKS and a scree descent made to the Waimakariri Valley. Mt Gizeh was first ascended by R.E. Clark, John Pascoe and A.G. Flower, 19th April 1930. (Grade. 1+)
1.5 The best climb from the head of the Anti Crow River is MT GREENLAW (2315m) which lies outside the Park boundaries. The usual route crosses Gizeh Col and descends to the upper Avoca Valley, then ascends the bluffs to the snow-fields below the peak. A longer, more varied route crosses Fools Col to Avoca Col, then follows a broken ridge to Greenlaw Col. From the col either continue along the ridge to the summit, or traverse the snow-field below the ridge. High peak first ascended by E.R. Williams, R.E. McInnes and R.E. Clark, 26 November 1930. Low peak first ascended by G. Doig, K. Coad and R.G. Logan, December 1934. (Grade. 2-)
