Notice to Climbers seeking access to Flock Hill Station

Climbers wishing to access Flock Hill will need to contact us at mrf@wave.co.nz in advance of their visit. A safety notice will be issued and the attached form should be returned and a copy of it carried as proof of permission.

This system has been in place now for some time and the vast majority of climbers are emailing access requests and treating the hill with care, but I would like to make the following points...

Recently some new permanent climbing aids have been fitted in Dry Gully and climbing mats bolted to boulders. Each of these actions damages the limestone and even though slightly, it is permanent and stands out. Our farm manager has also reported unburied faeces and toilet paper (which his dogs love to roll in during mustering!) and while we are working with the Alpine club to provide a source of poo pots (these are currently available from the DOC Information Centre at 133 Victoria St in Christchurch, and could shortly be available in Arthur's Pass also - Ed) and an emptying facility in the mean time please bury your waste or poop under a small rock which can be replaced over the deed. Dogs have been reported on site recently. Our farm lessee will put us under pressure to close while he has stock there if this occurs again. Finally climbers are still entering from the Cave Stream reserve and as such damaging the fence (a deer fence so people force themselves under it so no longer stock proof). Climbers should park at the entrance on the Arthur's Pass side of Parapet rock (the one covered in graffiti) and walk from there.

The climbers who read and return the safety notice are not the problem and we ask these, the vast majority of responsible outdoors people, to advise those few who break the rules to please comply with the standard ethics of visiting special sites.

A new Safety notice now includes details of annual closure for lambing (1 November to 25 December). Merino ewes will abandon their lambs if disturbed in the early stages of the lamb's life with obvious consequences. There are no exceptions to this rule!

Remember to carry a copy of the safety notice with you.
